This tour was very interesting. First, must know that is long, windy Road to get up to the Carrera marble site. We took a small bus through a deep dark tunnel and went inside the marble cave, where we saw how they mine the marble. It’s extremely interesting and educational. Fascinating way to spend 45 minutes!
Very interesting tour inside an actively mined mine. This mine cuts very high quality marble blocks for sculptures. You learn a bit about the history and a lot about the process of mining the blocks
The tour of Carrera Mine is a fantastic experience and here is what to expect for preparation. The tour is 2 plus hours. Getting there you travel along very steep, dusty and bumpy roads. You travel in the guides Range Rovers and some have reviewed the ride negatively. This is the only way to get there! The ride is part of the adventure. You are in high altitude and half the tour is outdoor, so bring sunsreen. Bring water too. Along with dusty roads there is marble dust which will get on your clothing and shoes, so a change of clothes is handy. You will see the mining operations above ground and under ground. While you tour, heavy machinery is operating within 15 feet of you, so be aware. The guide will keep you safe, but you will be amazed to be this close to the workers mining the marble. This is an interesting and immersive experience of the mining operations today and understanding the operations through history. Highly recommended.
Amazing experience. The history provided by the Carrara workers gives all the necessary information regarding the work in the mine and the overall process of marble extraction. As a person without knowledge of the Italian language, I was positively surprised by the possibility to hear everything in English. Groups are gathered in small cars of max 4 people which makes it more comfortable.
The marble tour was impressive. Our guide explained the process of mining the marble and gave a lot of history. We were served a small meal and wine at the restaurant as part of our tour. I did not care for the lard, but the salad and other items were delicious. The two ladies at the restaurant were working very hard and really trying to ensure we had a great visit. This was a great tour and I do recommend it, unless you have a fear of heights.
Great tour. Definitely need faith in your driver on the way up and down. Tour guide explained the process of mining marble pretty well but there isn’t too much to explain. This is one of two tours here where one goes inside the mountain and the other (this one) goes up it.
Lovely little tour up the side of the marble mountain with plenty of cool history to learn. On my tour we were not able to make it inside the caves or see any work being done but the guide was excellent and was able to answer all our questions. It is a bit of a bumpy ride to make it up the mountain though so be warned. There is also a cool museum about how the marble is cut for a small fee that is outside.
Excellent trip to the marble valley in Carrara, guides was very knowledgeable and no questions were left unanswered. Souvenir shop was packed with lovely trinkets reminder of your trip to the marble valley in Carrara!
